I'll give you a good indicator if the person is the NPC or not. Usually NPC's have a basic linear thinking and how to find out things.

Meanwhile the player is equipped with numerous methodologies, such as scientific method and other logical tools.

Most NPC's just pretend that they actually work or understand things, most of the times it's just a shallow imitation. If you want to find out if it's an NPC, construct a small situation or the argument that requires more advanced calculations and methodologies to get applied for it to be solved. You will see their dumbfounded faces, or a smart smirk.
