I haven't read much about early Christianity, but by the sounds of what others have said, it's almost akin to Buddhism.
Would you be more likely to subscribe to Christianity if they didn't have all the fancy bullshit added to the religion to make peasant farmers half way around the world accept them? (and hence adding to the Vatican's power, but detracting from the truth)
