You're not paying for the piece of paper, you're paying for the chance to interact with and learn from people who have many years of experience in learning and teaching the topics you're (presumably) interested in.

Textbooks can be read for free, of course. If that's all you want then go ahead. Ain't nobody stopping you. Also there's nobody telling you when you're getting a stupid idea that everyone has already thought of long before you came along, and nobody's going to help you when you just can't get some particularly difficult concept down. Nobody's going to grade you harshly so that you can see exactly where your areas of ignorance are.

You're paying for the chance to put all of those human resources to use and actually train your mind with not only the subject matter, but the processes of thought required to winnow out truth from falsehood in your own oh-so-fallible brain.

If you're just reading the text and ignoring the school then you probably should just quit and get a job right now, yes.
