Hey, /sci/, I just started trying to learn maths in my spare time because I liked it in high school but never got past trig in college. I've reached a proof problem that I'm having a little trouble understanding. Could someone explain it to me? It's probably crazy obvious, but even with the answer, I'm still not quite getting it.

Q: What is wrong with this "proof"? Let x=y.
x^2 = xy
x^2 - y^2 = xy - y^2
(x + y)(x - y) = y(x - y)
x + y = y
2y = y
2 = 1

Answer: One step requires dividing by x - y = 0.

If someone could even tell me which step this is referring to, I might be able to work it out on my own. As I said, I just started this (it's been three years since I touched a mathematics book), and I apologize if this is crazy easy and I'm missing the obvious. I would really appreciate any assistance in this.
