Real magnet question here.

How is it possible that a weak kitchen magnet is able to pick up and hold a coin despite the entire gravitational pull of the earth weighing down on it?

fucking factor rings. how do they work??

Ever since hitting factor rings in Abstract Algebra I've been so lost and frustrated. I thought I understood factor groups relatively well but it was difficult. this I literally don't get at all.

does anyone know of any online resources that can explain this kind of stuff in detail: factor rings and ring homomorphisms. This stuff is really, really frustrating me.

pic related. how I feel whenever I try to do this stuff.

If the universe is expanding right now, it means it's volume is increasing, right? Where? Does it mean that there is a room 'outside' the universe, where it expands?

http://www.foxnews.com/scitech/2011/04/22/worlds-largest-atom-smasher-detected-god-particle/

Rumor floating around is that the Higgs Boson has been found at the LHC.

May not be true but a rumor is a rumor. Just like in high school, the rumor about the black guy with the foot long dick was fake but the one about the slut who got gangbanged was true.

tl;dr even if this is just a rumor its pretty big shit.

If they discovered it they are supposed to be releasing the discovery on easter.

pic semirelated, it will be my reaction to rumor being proven true

So you're taking an ordinary differential equations test, and the first question is this:

Solve p' = N*p - M*p² + K, where N, M and K are constants, and p is a function of t.

What do you do?

What I did? I intellectually bent over and spread, that's what.

Guys I just had a thought about sphere magnets and I've never seen one before. How do they behave and where do the north and south poles occur?

So if u'=2u, solving by substitution of variable I would get

du/u = 2dx (assume I'm deriving on x for lol purposes)
ln(u) = 2x
u = e^(2x)

Fine. But in every ODE book I go to, they, for some cocks reason say that u=C1 * e^(2x), where C1 is a constant. This makes sense, since an ODE without an initial value should have infinite solutions, but WHERE THE FUCK DOES THE C1 COMES FROM?

Wolframalpha is being derp and showing me the same thing without explanation
