You're purposefully misunderstanding the intuition.
Whether or not the topological spaces [math]X[/math] and [math]Y[/math] are homotopy equivalent doesn't refer to deformations relative to embeddings in specific topological spaces.
Otherwise you could give the even sillier example that the circle with unity radius around 0 on two different copies of [math]\mathbb{R}^2[/math] aren't homotopy equivalent because, well, how the fuck are you going to deform one into the other when they're on two different sets?
