India had massive numbers of people. When almost everyone is living off of subsistence farming, "gdp" or any other proxy measure for economic activity is going to be effectively a gauge of the number of people farming and over what land.
It was never, at any point, the most advanced or wealthy/capita civilization on the planet. It was always a shithole, slightly better than sub-saharan Africa (except for the period of European rule over Africa, where many of those countries were wealthier than even Korea and Spain). We then of course see the great divergence between high IQ races such as Europeans and East Asians, and lower-IQ races such as Indians, Arabs, Africans, Natives etc.
