Let me try to explain the basic to you.
The Lagragian formalism, Hamiltion formalism and Newtonian formalisn, can all be derived from each other.

The Least action principle can be used to derive all three without referencing each other. The least action princple is more fundemenal as it doent assume for any physical theory to be true. It is purely a mathematical constuct based off the calculus of variations. It is used extensivly in physics to derive physical laws, physical constants, physical relationships, conserved quantities, etc.

Most of everything we know actually can be derived from the calculus of variations and symmetry argumets alone. Maxwells equations, Newtons Laws, Lagragian Mech, Hamiltonian Mech, Special and General Relativity, Quantum Mechanics, Statistical Mechanics, Quantum Field Theory, Quantum Electrodynamics, Quantum Chromdynamics (just about everything).
