Helping a friend with her maths ''education'' (she is 16)
She asked me to explain how ''lowest common multiples'' work. So I did the math using a couple of examples.

her reply was ''thanks, that really helps... you are suuuuuch a nerd''

Welp, a 16 year old considers basic knowledge of bog standard maths as being ''nerdworthy'' 2 years away from completing highschool where she would (ideally) have a full understanding of calculus.

my thoughts are, is this representitive of the ''noughties'' generation? Is this truly how bad modern kids are with education? I have to say, all my relatives daughters and sons in highschool and any time i've ever come into the subject of modern day kids dealing with education, I have seen this pattern.
More than ever a rebuttal of a value or interest in education or even intelligence and EVERY modern kid I have seen these days is completely overindulged in social technology.

infact in the last few decades I've been especially distraught at how pitiful and ignorant mankind has been of space and the universe in general. Only in the past year (with spacex and planetary resources) have I regained slight respect for humanity in the sense of space exploration.

what do you guys think about professors that don't allow you to look at your textbooks/notes during an exam?

i came to the conclusion today that it's pretty fucking dumb. all it trains you to do is memorize things for a couple hours.

my programming teacher gave us this test on some shit but didn't allow us to use our notes or textbooks - this never bothered me before but i realized that real programmers almost always have some literature about the program language their using handy

then i thought some more and realized that in most serious professions you almost always consult some other source for solving problems (whether it's a book or article or person etc.)

so how the fuck does taking an exam without a book or some outside reference prepare us for the real world?

tl;dr - why the fuck can't we use textbooks on school exams? we do when we're outside of school
