Is it true that most animals other than humans can't metabolize fats?

I just remembered it popping up in a thread a while ago and I didn't think any of it at the time. It may just have sunk in how remarkable that would be.

Well, I mean people spent a long time trying to get rid of smallpox! For most of the 17th and 18th centuries, smallpox was such an issue that most of the population was scarred and pitted from it. It's too bad we never found a solution to.... Oh wait.

Well, how about all that "talk" on physics? Lord Kelvin said that we knew everything knowable about science in about 1899. He must have been right, I mean, it's not like we discovered things like flight, relativity, radiation, atomic theory, quantum mechanics, nuclear chain-reactions, computing, galaxies, quasars, DNA, penicillin, a cure for polio, insulin, or the sequencing of the human genome since then, right?

Nobody in the history of mankind who has ever claimed a thing to be "impossible" or "beyond our reach" has ever been proven right. And many, many of them have been proven wrong.

You can take that bet if you want, but don't expect me to give you good odds.
