Funny, I would have suggested starting from the general settings because of the same reasons. The metric space is motivated by epsilon and delta, and those are from analysis. Although, having a metric gives concreteness and makes it easier to see how things are related to shape. If I remember correctly, Mendelson (whose book is really beginner friendly) starts with the general case, but he uses the more general (and more complicated imo) definition for neighbourhoods.
