I don't really care if it's scientific or not. All I know is that it has a very direct and deep influence on the quality of life of anyone who doesn't live off the grid. Couple this with the fact that some things seem to be working much better than others, and I don't see why you wouldn't study it.
How is it less important for humans that any science?

Well, from a militaristic standpoint it makes sense to assume that alien races are aggressive (if they're not, then we'll be pleasantly surprised). Which means if we find them first, they don't necessarily know where Earth is and it is more sound to take aggressive measures against them (not saying we would, just... the option is on the table).

Whereas if we were found first, our assumption is that they would be aggressive against us (because that's the safest assumption to make). In which case, they would know where our home planet was but we wouldn't know where their home planet was, leaving us in a tactically vulnerable position.

tl;dr humans want to find life first because we're defensive and suspicious.

True, humans evolved specifically to be technologically dependent, (lol, singularity already happened) so it makes sense that human intelligence be devoted to technological advancement while for an alien intelligence it (may) not be necessary.

...and yes, we are interested in finding intelligent life elsewhere so we can feel smug while we mock people who believe something different than us. That is the only reason. There is no other.
