The question depends on whether or not the first things constituting cells could survive away from the hydrothermic vents. If they were tied to the vents they are much more likely to face total sterilization if the vent died and therefore lead to multiple beginnings. However if they were able to survive away from the vent, there was likely just one event. Exponential growth would near instantly fill all corners of the ocean and no weather or climate event would be extreme enough to sterilize all habitats.
