Male psychology is rooted in the bolstering and protection of the Ego.

The common male may view virginity as a sacred thing, and may feel a sense of dominance and pride being the one responsible for 'taking the v-card' as it were.

Also, an inexperienced male may feel conscious of his inexperience and may seek an equally inexperienced female that she may not 'notice' his inexperience.

That would be my guess, anyway.
