Is there any kind of formula for calculating the optimal size of a group under certain situations? I need to know how many of my neighbors to keep alive during the apocalypse.

Imagine that every atom has a bit of energy, and it can tag another atom to give away some energy, but the choice of which atom to tag is completely random. If they play that game for long enough then the energy will be more or less evenly distributed. Even if every atom in a body is at the same temperature and pressure they are still playing this tagging game. Some are moving very fast with lots of energy and some are moving slow, but the vast majority are somewhere in the between.

Is it possible to solve for the partition function of the 1D Ising model without using periodic boundary conditions?

To compute the Hamiltonian I started off assuming a cubic lattice and then bumped it down to 1D when I needed to, but now I think I would have been better off assuming a circular spin chain instead so that it had a periodic boundary condition.

Sorry for the homework question. Google hasn't been much help.

Cosmos the book is a must have for anyone interested in science or atronomy. Almost brings a tear to my eye every page I read. Im so thankful that someone had the foresight to put it all on paper to share his knowlege with the rest of the world.

btw, he used mary jane like most other enlightened peeps, to expand his mind!

I have a mighty fine book thoroughly covering solid state physics. I am thinking of majoring in electrical and/or aeronautical engineering once I finish my aa. How much solid state physics is applied in these fields of engineering. Would I use all solid state phenomenon? some? Please help me with some advice... and also I have volume 61 of division of engineering and applied sciences harvard university... I figure it would explain everything I need to know on the topic of solid state physics and whatnot... however where the hell would I find the rest of these volumes? They are very nicely organized/written and gets right to the point of the subject. I accidentally found this on amazon and got it for one cent... can't find them on google :/

I agree man, cannabis is one of my favorite psychoactive substances besides anything in the tryptamine family. And while were on the subject of great thinkers that used cannabis you can't forget Carl Sagan he wrote a great article related to it called mr.x if you haven't read it I would suggest it.

What claim does the government of Australia have to the land?
Because their ancestors came along and said 'This our land now.'
We cannot, and will not pay Australia monetary compensation for the land we take, however we will have different systems that would be immensely beneficial to them such as the rent-a-factory system (they use our power and automation to create any items they want by giving that factory the blueprints of what they want and the robots keep on producing as long as the raw materials required are constantly supplied to it by the company/group in question.)

We can also agree that any technology developed in the TRS, since it is open-source will be most likely released first to Australians as it propagates through to the rest of the world. And last of all, THEY'RE NOT USING IT.

He directly influenced the outcomes of MILLIONS of lives, with many of those that watched/read Cosmos going on to become scientists and astronomers.

I guess that's sort of a triple-whammy.
