Where does the feeling/urge for justice or revenge comes from? And is retaliation rational? Should you ever retaliate?

Let's say someone tries to get you fired, lies about you to colleges and superiors or steals from you; and you have the opportunity to retaliate, should you? Why do we feel this need for "justice" or revenge?
I've being thinking more and more about this, maybe trying to retaliate will only waste energy and cause more problems, especially in a professional setting.
Perhaps I'm depressed, but I just want to do the work that comes my way and let the rest take care of itself.

When I realized I am highly gifted in the subject. Currently a PhD student supervised by a leading mathematician based on a recommendation from my professor, not too dissimilar to John Nash's one liner recommendation letter, mind you.
But I'm extremely low-key (my biggest inspiration is Perelman). I will make great achievements, that much is certain, but to what extent do I want to be lauded as a world-class mathematician? Not in the slightest. I'm quite comfortable with being just a blip in history. I love the beauty and rigor of mathematics and I do it for myself.
