It's not the swab, it's the visual inspection that differentiates the diagnosis between HSV and Canker Sores. Swabs are still unreliable, making the point that "testing" is unreliable.

Testing methodology causes either false positives or false negatives, depending on how they run the tests. So they get whatever answer is politically expedient at the moment.
