it's not surprising at all that she left. this is why I don't like the "do what your supervisor recommends" advice. if her PhD was in something like HEP, she would probably have stayed. If you do something for 4 years that you don't like to the level of becoming an expert in it, you like to waste your own time. You can go back to a PhD anyway so who cares. You have one life.
