I am sure a deal was made with the locals to either employ them or to simply buy the resource from them and it is the local warlords that force them to do the labor. The company would love nothing more than to bring their people and much more productive and efficient system but that would require sending in mercs to take out the warlords who probably wouldnt be real thrilled about it. This unfortunately is not legal however.

Before white colonized Africa and Americas the infant mortality rate was around 50% and life expectancy in the 20's.
