IQ is informative as low levels, but not at high levels.
>If you have a low IQ, you're dumb for sure.
>If you have a high IQ, you could be anywhere from dumber-than-average to genuinely smart.
This explanation seems plausible if you add noise to it, since it matches up with IQ vs SAT (SAT used as proxy for actual intelligence here).

The problem is that you get the same result by taking a linear correlation (i.e. assume IQ accurately measures intelligence at all levels) and noising that up.
