In science race and gender are used to characterize differences in groups/individuals of a species.

Gender essentially refers to masculine or feminine traits regardless of the actual sex. Hence why mtf transexuals' sex is male but gender would be female/femenine etc.

In regards to race there are plenty of genetic differences between whites/blacks etc. They just usually aren't that significant. Genetic differences in cognitive abilities are shown in ashkenazi jews and it makes sense considering the cultural practice (ie:scholarly) and how darwinism can be applied to such development even though their reason for increased cognitive abilities also leaves them at much higher risk for neurological diseases. Also, white/caucasians and blacks/african-americans/africans have different muscle structure types, I would guess a response to the different environments their ancestors lived in.

Anyways, the whole point is that no matter how politically correct and equal someone wants to their viewpoint to be. It's an empirical fact that their are genetic differences. The way I think it should be interpreted is that regardless of this the whole point of being "civil" and shit is that we are evolved enough to understand that such differences are not a reason to annex an entire race but that does not mean they should simply be ignored in regards to scientific and medical applications and so on.
Obviously not verbatim but that's the gist.
