Public phones and leftism are incompatible. Even in the 80s, vibrant cities had problems with phone booths turning into toilets and overdose sites. Removing the booths and just putting a shroud over the phone didn't keep them from being vandalised and destroyed. Then there's the public health angle of having so many people touch handsets and put them to their faces. Each person having their own communication device is a good thing. The problem was when the phones got apps and most of those apps were social media.
