When can you reliably say someone is a "scientist"?

There's the obvious accreditation metric (have a degree from higher education and a paper published in your name), but in the absence of the certification, what are the essential characteristics of a "scientist"?

I'm in college too, and I've thought about this question many times before. A lot of my classmates are happy-go-lucky people who've led privileged lives with seemingly little concern about their future, which is not to say that these people are idiots. I'm sure many of them have ambitious goals, but it's disturbing to think that the majority will never reach them. Life's a bitch.
