My grades through undergrad were pretty abysmal. In first and second year I had 2.0 gpa. In third and fourth I had 3.0. I just finished fifth year with 3.5 gpa and made the dean's list. I applied last fall with the shitty grades from year 1-4. Is one year of good grades enough to make a difference?

Depressed? Over something that makes no sense? At least get it through your head that you were born once, so it's possible you can be born again. As yourself. Or another person, I don't know.

I happen to like Ian Malcolm's Dragon Fan fractal. It's how things worked out in the book. But chaos theory is not backed by science. Still a good framework to show how science doesn't always go according to plan, either though.
