Just look at SLS and James Webb. Or how shit the shuttle was. Supposed to be inexpensive and rapidly reusable. Instead was $1 billion per launch, only four launches per year, and killed all of its crew twice. Even when they fixed hubble it cost more for the mission than for a new hubble.
SpaceX convinced me the problem isn't money, in management and bureaucracy. Every president has different objectives and cancel each others projects. Managers are more occupied with saving their cushy jobs. Lobbying by retard Alabama senators to turn NASA into a jobs program for their shitty states. Price plus contracts for corporate whore like boeing and lockheed. Meanwhile SpaceX is private with Elon with a common vision. Employees work 80 hour weeks. SpaceX will beat NASA to Mars, I guarantee it.

elon musk announced last year that he is sending a self driving electric tesla car into martian orbit as a publicity stunt. he announced no plans to actually operate it in space, or land it on mars, but we know he has the technology to do it easily if he wanted.
also, the tesla roadster is 100% electric, and self driving, it could easily drive on a smooth area of the surface of mars with zero modifications.

There was a Musk thread a while ago and somebody there said that Musk is a fraud who uses public money for outdated technology. I want to ask people who understand this space stuff (if there are such people here)
