Hey /sci/,

Are there actually any theories that explain, or attempt to explain, the nature of time?

The only reason I ask is because I've never heard of any before, but over the past few weeks I've been developing an idea for how time can arise from the fabric of space. The idea isn't very mature, but at least conceptually it seems to fit in with things like relativistic effects, so it's interesting me.

/sci/,

I will be entering university as a math major soon and I have a few questions.

The past year I've taken my math education into my hands and have discovered how much I really enjoy mathematics. As a result, I plan on ultimately pursuing a career in mathematical academia.

I want to know how I can standout among other math undergraduates. As it stands my first semester of my freshmen year I will be taking Calc III and applied linear algebra, as this is as far as the placement exam allows you to go. I'm not sure how far that places me above other students, but as far as I can figure I'm already a year ahead in terms of courses.

My issue is that I have already educated myself far beyond that level. On my own, I'm currently studying the math typically taught in the third year of undergraduate studies for the university I will be attending.

So how can I stand out? How can I get ahead?

I feel as if just taking the courses and getting easy As in them because I already know the material won't be enough to differentiate me from other math majors.

Sup /sci/,

Is there any decent way for someone to measure their mathematical reasoning ability? Other than simply getting to high levels of math and seeing how you do?

Most tests that I've seen so far are pretty flawed. Things like the SAT are extremely simple, and any mistakes I make are simple mistakes like overlooking a negative, and therefore isn't great.

A kind of test that I can think of that might be good is one that doesn't require someone to know very specific formulas, and relies as much as possible on math reasoning ability. Perhaps one that offers you a very hard and long problem that can only be completed through rigorous reasoning, and doesn't rely on whether or not you remembered some formulas.

The reason I ask is because I'm curious to know where I actually stand.

Sup /sci/,

Any other underachievers out there?

Maybe I should elaborate. I'm an underachiever in that I hate dealing with the education system. For example, I will probably be going to a shitty university where I will probably be the most intelligent person there and have the highest SAT scores, by far.

When it comes to the subjects I like, particularly math and science, I'm an overachiever (kind of?), I find it fun and interesting, so I do well in it. I don't know if that's considered overachieving.

But yeah, intelligent, high SAT scores, probably going to be going to a shit college where the average SAT score is lower than 1500.

Anyone else in a similar boat?
