Anyone else hate their chem labs? Holy fucking shit, doing tests to determine x or y is annoying.

Sup /sci/

I'm at a decent russel group uni, doing chem. I should graduate with a masters next year with a reasonable first (probs about 80 %) and I'm doing a research project this summer with a member of my department (extra-curricular).

What are my chances of getting in if i applied to oxbridge for a phd? Is it a waste of my time applying or should i consider it?

So guise Ive got acess to my schools chem lab.
Its a high school lab so I don't think a lot of things will be here.
Any experiments I could carry out here?

Any chemfags around? I've only taken basic courses but I enjoy what we're doing, am relatively good at the class, and am thinking I might want to pursue a career in this field, but I don't even know enough to know which questions to ask. Can anyone offer some wisdom to an aspiring /sci/entist? Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Calculate the enthalpy change, in kJ, for the reaction: C2H4 +H2 -> C2H6, from the following data.

C2H4 + 3 O2 -> 2 CO2 + 2 H2O H = -1411 kJ
C2H6 + 7/2 O2 -> 2 CO2 + 3 H2O H= -1560. kJ
H2 +1/2 O2 -> -> H2O H= -285.8 kJ

Calculate the enthalpy change, in kJ, for the reaction: Ca + C + 3/2 O2 -> CaCO3, from the following data.

Ca + 2 C -> CaC2 H= -62.8kJ
CO2 -> C + O2 H= 394 kJ
CaCO3 + CO2 -> CaC2 + 5/2 O2 H= 1538 kJ

Calculate the enthalpy change, in kJ, for the reaction: 2 H2 + 2 C + O2 -> C2H5OH, from the following data.

C2H5OH + 2 O2 -> 2 CO2 + 2 H2O H= -875 kJ
C + O2 -> CO2 H= -394.51 kJ
H2 + 1/2 O2 -> H2O H= -285 kJ

Calculate the enthalpy change, in kJ, for the reaction: CS2(l) + 2 H2O(l) -> 2 H2S(g) + CO2(g), from the following data.

H2S(g) + 3/2 O2(g) -> H2O(l) + SO2(g) H = -563kJ
CS2(l) + 3 O2(g) -> CO2(g) + 2 SO2(g) H = -1075kJ

Solid potassium chlorate decomposes upon heating to form solid potassium chloride and oxygen gas. A mixture of potassium chlorate and potassium chloride with a mass of 7.44 g is heated until all the potassium chlorate has decomposed. If 789 mL of gas is collected over water is collected over water at .976 atmospheres and 30.0 C, what is the percent potassium chlorate in teh original mixture? (vapor pressure of water is at 30.0 C = .023 atm.

Help with some chemistry? The equation H2O(s) → H2O(l) ΔH=6.01 kJ is the thermochemical equation for the melting of water at 0°C. How many grams of water can 297 kJ of energy melt? I keep getting 890 g...

The textbook example of a linear equation looks something like <span class="math">y = kx + m
, and when it goes through the origin <span class="math">m = 0
. How do you know which variable "corresponds" to <span class="math">k
if we deal with other variable names, for example <span class="math">n = c\cdotV
or <span class="math">m = M\cdotn
?

Hey guys. Taking summer chemistry, and I'm confused about some things when it comes to naming compounds.

From my notes,

ZnSo4 translates to Zinc sulfate
and
Cu(OH)2 translates to copper (II) hydroxide

Both zinc and copper are metals, so what makes it so that Cu's translation includes a roman numeral, but Zn's translation doesn't?

Secondly, why do polyatomic ions have the charges that they do? For example, why does SO4 have a charge of -2? Considering they're both Group 6A elements, why isn't the charge -10?

Thanks

I'm taking chemistry over the summer.

I'm only a week in, and have no fucking idea what's going on.

Teach me chemistry, /sci/.

Is chemistry a worthwhile field to go into? I'm currently a junior chemistry major, and I'm wondering if i'll actually be able to get a decent paying meaningful job when I graduate. Is graduate school a must?

I plan on taking chemistry this summer. Should I prepare for it now with prep books or simply memorize all the elements / compounds? I'm not sure what to expect from the class and don't want to use time learning information I won't use in the class.

I have an invention in mind, but the problem is that there are already stuff like it on the web. It's not exactly a mainstream thing, and I doubt a lot of people have ever thought about it, but there's a site that sells them. And only one, as far as I can see.

Now my question is, how exactly do patents work? If I ever latch on the market with my design, perhaps a better design, than the one that exists now, what would be the legal processes of doing so? And I live in a different country from where it's sold, so maybe that can help.

Alright, time for some chemistry.

Na C2 H6 O3 Cl. Answer me /sci/, what does it make?

It's the mixture of Ethylene glycol and Sodium hypochlorite.
