I feel you.
That say, humanity isn't that mediocre, we just take lot of time to look beyond false good idea and discover what we've actually been longing for all this time.
Colonizing Mars became a meme because of our bias toward the familiar, not helped by decade of science-fiction depicting terraforming as easy. Not counting the literal new frontier meme.
It is easier to make movie on Earth and pretend it's a colony/Earth-like alien world than to build a city worth of fake space habitat.
