Really, it's not as bad as you make it out to be. Within the ratrace to tenure, the situation is about as bleak as you describe (fuck ivy-league nepotism). So don't do that. Start a company, join a larger company, become a consultant, work at a research institute. There are plenty of careers for scientists, but unsurprisingly tenured professors who wasted their life postdoc-hopping without family for inhumane PIs have no understanding of what's available elsewhere.
