kek, there's nothing more cringe then people who call themselves "scientifically minded" but don't even know calculus.

Math is to science in general what music theory is to music , annoying and hard , but when you master it you can do incredible things with it.

Popmath is obnoxious. I spend untold hours every semester squinting at a LaTeX editor typsetting problem after problem only for people who have never taken, nor have any interest in taking any proof-based courses to exclaim "Look at the pretty fractals! Isn't math awesome?! xD :P" and the like. The unfortunate thing about "pop" anything is that it convinces people that they're actually taking part and learning about an activity when they are, in reality, not even scratching the surface. Hence, you get a lot of Dunning-Kruger afflicted people running around. No thanks.

Pic definitely related.

because they don't make wishes come true. to understand the pretty lights, you need to really break your head.
as an astrophysicist I love breaking my head and studying the pretty lights. I also like having an excuse to stay up late at night and sleep in. also most of my astrophysics related classes don't start before 2pm for the same reasons. looking at the pretty lights has answered many of my questions which others have dubbed as unanswerable or unimportant.

>motivate them to join a new scientific field
>It could allow the average joe to find a new passion
>why is popsci so evil

because the average Joe motivated by popsci sucks at math, is a pot head, and won't be able to contribute to science nor understand developments in it. He will do little more than brag about how "scientific" his belief in atheism is because "duh, science, technology, clearly atheism is right dude"

USA uses the imperial system because of politics. Let's remember that in 1999. NASA lost a space probe for Mars due to this.
As an astrophysicist I often run into old measurements for various things. I'm supposed to be doing homework now and I'm supposed to express my solution in steradians and square degrees for example. sometimes you can get formulas, constants and solutions easier using old systems of measurement, especially when it comes to astronomy.

don't be lazy, learn to convert it's not that hard.

How do you keep motivated while doing the most tedious and boring part of your work? Like reading tons of dense articles, writing tons of dense articles, learning and looking up stuff for weeks you have no idea of (learning is fun theoretically, but at some point it stops).
So what do you tell yourself in that moments /sci/? How do you keep sane and concentrated?
