yo /sci/. studying for GRE. they love questions involving percent decreases/increases. but how do you distinguish when to calculate percent increase/decrease using this form:

(new value)=(multiplier)(old value)
where the multiplier is the percent increase/decrease converted into a decimal and added/subtracted to 1.

OR

(% increase/decrease)= (100*Difference)/(original value)

I have used the first formula many times and received correct answers for practice questions before, but recently that form doesn't seem to be working and they suddenly introduced the second formula.

so what is the fundamental difference in the application between these two formulas?

The way they have you place for mathematics, if you don't get a good enough score on the Calculus questions, then they make you start from the beginning in Algebra 1 and take everything over again. If they make you restart, then you can't even place into their engineering, business, or science programs because they have a cutoff for 2nd year and they don't let you get in after 2nd year even if you get through Calculus later. They basically fuck you over unless you're a math genius on arrival of your 1st year. They don't even give you the chance to go into anything but Liberal Arts or Communications.
