The ratio facilitates increasing the size of something through repetition, that's why it's seen so much in nature.

The ratio of the size of one object (a) in a sequence to the previous object (b) is the same as the size of the next object in the sequence (a+b) and the object (b).
a/b = the ratio, we want to find this for some reason so we'll call it "K" to simplify things instead of (a/b) = size of the next object divided by the object = (a+b)/a
a = Kb, (a+b)/a = (Kb+b)/Kb = K
K²b=Kb+b, K²=K+1
K²-K-1 = (K-½)²-¼-1
1¼ = (K-½)², √1¼=K-½
K=√1¼+0.5
