Share of taxes in GDP in USA vs Scandi countries. As you see since they started to build their welfare states in the sixties their tax rates have gone sky high.

You should also note, that they were already rich in the 60s. More so than now in relative scale.

These countries used to have rather low taxes until mid sixties. They got rich during these times. They were rich (and relatively richer) already before they started their high tax thing.
