Feeling pretty shitty. I'm currently in a top 3 engineering program (ranked at the graduate level), working towards my PhD. I finished my masters degree over the summer and began work at this new university only a few weeks ago.

I was going to a mid-ranked university for my bachelors and masters degree, and had a 3.9 GPA as a masters student. Now, I'm already worrying about whether or not I'll be able to get the 3.0 needed to maintain student status here. It's incredible how much more difficult the classes are, and how severe the grading can be.

For example, in one course I'm taking, the professor sets the average overall grade at a B-. That means to be at a 3.0, I'll need to do better than the average at a university where everyone is very talented. I was told by the professor of the other class that he won't give out anything less than a B- unless you completely fuck up the exams, but I've already had two quizzes and have been below the average both times. First one I scored 3 / 10 when the average was 4.2 / 10, and just now I scored 5 / 10 when the average was 6.8 / 10.

I should be here to do research, and think of classes as something to help me in my career. Instead, I'm thinking of classes as something to survive. I was anxious during my masters degree as well. In fact, anxiety has motivated me to work hard. However, it seems like I truly do have something to worry about even though I spend so much time reading and re-reading the material, even ahead of the class.

BAW /sci/ thread? Haven't seen one for awhile. I expect to get a lot of hate as well, but I've been here long enough for it not to phase me. Any other anxious grad students?
