http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Project_Orion_(nuclear_propulsion)

>watching an episode of Cosmos on Netflix
>Carl Sagan starts talking about space travel
>he mention a ship design concept called Project Orion
>it is apparent possible with modern-day technology
>wonder why the fuck no one has tried to build it
>he then answers that question

So why did we decide to ban the detonation of nuclear weapons in space? Is it harmful to people on Earth? What if we put conventional rockets on the ship and pushed it passed the moon before using the main engine? It seems like a silly reason to limit a potentially useful method of space travel.

You should study microbiology and virology. I had similar interest but I had a few more like astronomy and quantum physics so I study astronomy/astrophysics, 3th year out of 7. Stupid education system in my country. Never really liked to discuss atheism... I'm agnostic atheist. Don't have any knowledge about viruses :(

Note-taking, /sci/. Classes start in about a month and I want to perfect my note-taking. Until now I've just been haphazardly writing shit down in notebooks with little organization. There must be a better way.

How do you take/manage your notes, /sci/?

So what sort of things did you guys do in high school?

Any summer programs? Any Intel contestants/semifinalists here?

Entered Intel myself, but didn't get anywhere.

Sup /sci/

I just got back from an antique mall that opened up near by. Bought myself an 1880's portable electroshock therapy machine for $125, talked the guy down from $200.
So, how about a thread about old medical practices and electricity?

pic related, it was mfw I saw that machine sitting on the desk.

Watch Contact as a kid: Cool story bro.

Watch Contact as an adult: OH! I see. She couldn't relate with his faith based belief, but at the end of the movie she admits to having faith in her own subjective experiences despite them being contrary to objective evidence. Cool story bro.

The biggest remaining problems in biology:

1. Which exact processes are the material basis of consciousness?
2. Why did consciousness evolve?
3. How exactly did life first start on earth?

(in no particular order)

Anything else?

Discuss.
