MIT seems to have come up with the world's first broad-spectrum antiviral.

Any charges for these 'journals' is just pure window dressing to line someone's pockets. Regardless of whether students can get at them, the problem is that the public can't without forking out cash.
And of course papers should remain peer reviewed. Why should this process cost money? Why does everything have a pricetag nowadays - would noone peer review them for free?
And 90% of papers free through the library for students? Why the hell not 100%? Honestly, you'd think we were taking doughnuts from upset clinically obese diabetics.

We're talking about science here. There's nothing to hide and why we don't have everything free for the masses to get at is not helping the fact that the public is clueless about what we do.

But things will change soon enough, if we voice up. And let's face it, noone will pay when freer alternatives become more popular - it doesn't take much for a few people to get the info out for free regardless - just look at torrenting.
