They only appear to tick slower, its not literally slower. Its mostly just a trick of perspective, sure it would seem like that a clock in a relativistic vehicle would have a much longer distance between its two signal plates. But in fact in reality the relative distance between the two plates never changes. Momentum is always conserved so the photons in the moving reference frame clock are never taking a longer path than the would stationary. Time dilation is the fact that should they drive past you at relativistic speed, they would *look* like theyre stretching things out but in fact, they're not.
