ITT: General Engineering discussion

Most importantly, is engineering a decent career path?
Does it have a good outlook for the future?

Hello /sci/

I am a 24 year old male and I have an interview for an engineering course coming up that I'm hoping will lead to a Computer Engineering undergraduate degree. They will ask me what skills or experience I have that is relevant to the course, and also why I'm interested in it. The interview is in 4 weeks so I should study and gain some skills on my computer that will be relevant to the course.

What should I do? The closest thing I did was 10 years ago when I made some Flash games and a couple of simple C programs.

Quick question, got a book from my dad (University Physics by Benson) and encountering notation I didn't learn in school. What's | | mean?

Like |dv| = (v/r)|dr|? (Circular motion)

Or is it just something you stick around delta X to make it look neater?

How would I go about calling all the constructors for an array of objects.

Object c[50]; How do I initialize those all? How can I call the constructor.

I need you guys more now than ever.

Given Eg = 1.12 eV and ni= 10E10 at 300K; Calculate the density of intrinsic electrons and holes at 200k.

Is there an easier way of doing this than having to calculate Nc and Nv?

>That feel when you get back your midterm and get 80%
>First time in 3 years of undergrad EE that you've gotten less than 90%
>That feel when I'm seriously contemplating suicide right now
>80% on a 15% midterm, already down 3%.

Whenever a character is transmitted, there is a small probability of an error occuring.

Given that the mean failure rate is 1 per 10 000 000 characters,if N characters are to be transmitted, how many characters must be transmitted such that the probability of no errors occuring is at least .999;

I assume this is a poisson problem with rate N/10 000 000?

Any help would be nice!

>Frequently visit an engineering forum
>Lots of posts about not being able to find jobs
>"Whats your gpa anon?"
>mfw 2.5-3.5 is their response.

Why would any company hire an engineer who couldn't even do simple stuff like undergrad.

Hey /sci/, looking for a couple of engineers (specific field does not matter right now) to answer a few questions by email. I feel /sci/ is the place to ask. It is for an MME 101 course that I am taking.

I WILL eventually need a full name and contact information (a legitimate email is all), as well as other information from the survey. This will be done via email, NOT on this board (for obvious reasons).

I assure you that I'm not a troll or spam bot, I'm just an engineering student looking to complete an assignment for a required course.

My safe-email is roderickhales(at)aol.com

Hypothetical scenario for engineers:

You can go back to whatever time it was before uni and really take your time learning X, Y, Z and so forth. What is X Y and Z?
I'm applying for next fall (not underage, just late to the party) and want to go in as prepared as possible. What's really, really necessary on the maths side of things?

>A Master of Engineering (Magister in Ingeniaria) (abbreviated M.Eng., ME or MEng) or Master of Technology (abbreviated M.Tech. or MTech) or Master of Science in Engineering (abbreviated M.Sc. Engg or MSc(Engg)), can be either an academic or professional master's degree in the field of engineering.
Starting that next year. System here doesn't work like it does in America, you essentially go for the 5 year programme right from the bat. That's what Wiki called it so I guess it's correct.

Anyway, to the point. There are a lot of bloody fields within in, from electrical engineering to biological engineering. Based on high school/A levels/nothing of uni level it's a bit tricky to know what would be for me.

So how the fuck are you supposed to know what you should specialize in? Any good resource where you can read up on them, not only in what they do (ie "Electrical engineers work with electricity!) but also what you actually do, I presume someone working with electricity does very different shit to a chemical engineer.

What engineering degree should I go for? How is electrical engineering? Job availability and pay are what I care about mainly.

I'm reluctant to choose anything involving a focus on the use of computers since the jobs are apparently being outsourced on a massive scale.

Also it seems there are no engineers in /adv/.

Sup /sci/? Should I go for a B.S. in applied mathematics or electrical engineering?

I hear mixed things about EE jobs. I hear they are going up and down. I am afraid to go that route and not have a job.

Applied mathematics seems more general, but what all could I do with it? Is it more beneficial than, say, a mathematics B.A.?

dx is a hyperreal

u = dx
y = u
dy/du = 0

Is this right?
