Lets take a moment tonight to look at Rossi's innovation, if real this could be the biggest technological achievement since writing and agriculture and would reshape the socio and political boundaries.

1-megawatt cold fusion power plant now available – yours for just $1.5 million
http://www.extremetech.com/extreme/171660-1-megawatt-cold-fusion-power-plant-now-available-yours-for-just-1-5-million

>Believe it or not, the first cold fusion power plant is now available to pre-order. The E-Cat 1MW Plant, which comes in a standard shipping container, can produce one megawatt of thermal energy, using low-energy nuclear reactions (LENR) — a process, often known as cold fusion, that fuses nickel and hydrogen into copper, producing energy 100,000 times more efficiently than combustion. It sounds like E-Cat is now taking orders for delivery in early 2014, priced fairly reasonably at $1.5 million.
> The fuel cost works out to be $1 per megawatt-hour, apparently, which is utterly insane — coal power is around $100 per megawatt-hour.

Would /sci/ mind helping me out with this?

What is delta G at body temperature (37 degrees C) if the concentration of A is 1.7 M and B is 0.8 M?

Any help is much appreciated.

Hey /sci/ can you lead me in the right direction with this chemistry problem?

Pure liquid octane (d = 0.707 g/mL) is used as the fuel in a test of a new automobile drive train. How much energy (in kJ) is released by complete combustion of of all the octane in a 20.4 gal fuel tank?

What I have tried so far is find the delta H for the combustion of C8H18 and then I figured out how many mols of C8H18 are in the fuel tank. What do I need to do here? I have tried to solve it by setting up a proportion like this: (delta Hr/2mol C8H18= delta Hx/mols in gas tank). Thanks for any help.

Isn't all energy the same thing but with different labels? Doesn't it take energy to convert energy into different energy? And if so, what is that energy converted to?

I was wondering if /sci/ could help me out with some calculus I before my exam tomorrow. Thanks in advance.

Find the following limit:
lim [(1+h)^2-1]/h
h-->0

HOW THE HELL DO I FACTOR /SCI/
WHAT THE HELL
2sin^2x -sinx -3 =0
And no I don't want an answer I want a way to think, a method something !

Yo /sci/ wassup

I got a question for you:

I'm a Mathematics and CS Major and I was wondering, which fields of mathematics would be best to study for these two with the hopes of a possibility of going into:
-Crypto
-Finance
and if all else fails just going into plain Software Engi.

Which fields of math would best cover these fields of study?
Abstract Algebra and Algebraic Geometry for Cyrpto?
What about Finance? Partial Diff Eq and Black Scholes models?

These are the two fields that peak my interest the most in mathematics

Who gives a fuck? Arguing over religion is the true thing that is detrimental to our society. People should be allowed to practice what they want, but shouldn't ram their ideas down others throats. Science is science. It is a field for those who want to discover the universe that they don't know already. This can be either in the intention of proving their religious beliefs, or lack thereof or for the intentions of pure discovery. I chose the latter. Everyone should too. This type of thread is cancerous and prevents any sort of rational thinking on this board. Have a nice new years.

what would be good light bulbs to imitate natural light so I can trick my brain to think it is actually day time??
What specs in light bulbs should I be looking for ?

Also, does anyone feel that they study better at night or is it just me ?

>Wait, so an engineering phd = math bachelor's with grad school classes?
I honestly am not that knowledgeable about undergrad math majors, but in talking to some grad students, this material is probably close to what you describe -- kind of a summary of the most important points of applied mathematics.

Realize this isn't the focus of the engineering PhD, it's just an important part of it. Some of the material is more abstract than others, but the majority of it you can show direct lines to modern engineering research work.

For example, standard undergrad aeronautics students learn thin airfoil theory, which is an extension of complex analysis & conformal mapping, which is a very rich and deep subject.

>Obviously there is still a lot of focus on engineering work, but it seems a math major isn't that behind if he decides to get an engineering PhD.
It's relatively common for math or physics undergrads to do engineering grad work.
