When we start populating other planets, how will birthdays be determined?

Your birthday is defined as a revolution around the sun, 365.25 days. If you live on mars, it takes 686.971 earth days to revolve around the sun. If you were 30 earth years then moved to mars and lived there for 10 earth years, how old would you tell people who were born on mars you were?

So just throwing it out there but why at some stage did someone say "fuck I really want to go to mars". Why not any other planet? Is there any real hope for it other than it's close and might magically be liveable on in the future?

ITT:Hypothetical Mars Colonization

The vast majority of the the initial inhabitants are scientists and the majority of them are in turn atheists. There is now a civilization solely based on science and rational thinking. How is it different.

ve-asteroid-impact.html

So, apparently until only like, 500 million years ago, Mars had a thriving magnetic field. Then, abruptly, it just sort of...stopped. The current theory floating around is that it was struck by a fuck off huge asteroid, which sounds reasonable, but it leads me to wonder something. Is it...okay, this is gonna sound kind of stupid, but..is it possible to just, you know, drill into the core and start it back up again? What's preventing Mars' dynamo from working, anyway, since it's clearly not due to lack of gravity.

Fuck Earth, I'm going to Mars. I'm going to study and apply my self. I'm going to calculate the trajectory and build a rocket that I can survive the journey in and land on Mars. I'm going to have a space suit. Upon landing I'm going to get out of the shuttle and walk as far as I can until I die. On me will be a note that says "Get the fuck off my planet."

*hypothetical situation*
The Emperor of China just went on the record today claiming that China will have humans to Mars by 2019 and they will claim Mars in the name of China and 5 years after that attempt to make outposts in Mars or "New China".

Now /sci/, I'm very curious of how The United States would react to this news and how another space race would be a positive effect on us. What are your opinions?

Mars is too unlike Earth. The gravity alone is enough to make life uncomfortable, it's .11G! And it will take way too long to terraform to support human life.

How about this- Mars used solely as a breadbasket planet. Fields of wheat that grow 20 feet tall with stalks thick as coke cans. And it will take much less effort to terraform so that it's suitable for plants.

If mars' atmosphere was the exact some composition that it is now, just much more dense, would we be able to survive there without oxygen tanks or anything?

A new kind of motor that will reduce space flight time dramatically. At the moment it takes about 2 years to get to Mars, with a classic thruster motor of course. With this new device, the flight time is reduced to a few months.

Feels good man.

Mars is a world of wonders...

It shouldn't be humans to mars in 50 years, it should be humans to mars in 10.

Seriously /sci/ why do you hate pop sci?
I can understand games/music/film has it's elite who hate it when new comers don't pay respect to the god fathers but science?
Explain yourself /sci/.

Why are we thinking of sending humans to Mars. It's just a giant desert, and humans cant do anything that we couldnt send a robot to do ie take specimens of rocks and ice caps etc.

Are we just doing to to prove we can? I say save the money to try and develop technology to get to more important places once life has actually been discovered...

ITT: we come up with or recite ideas of how to go to mars and/or colonize the moon

My idea for moon colonization=we use gaint electromagnetic accelerators(AKA railguns)
to cheaply launch building supplies to the moon(cheaper still if room tempature super conductors are ever made).
Then use robots to build a colony/base.

Idea for mars:Use railgun launchers on the earth to launch supplies into space for a station much bigger then the ISS.
Then use that station to construct robotic ships to go to mars, using A railgun on the station(shoot it in a way so it wont mess up the orbit).
Use those robots to build a similar station in mars orbit and on the ground to prepare for human exploration/colonization.
