"Scientific" socialism originally was used to distinguish itself from the utopian socialists like Fourier or Owen. It's based on the idea that a government's legitimacy comes from reason alone. But scientific socialism also refers to Marx's theory in general, which were formed based on empirical observations of the capitalist mode of production, and as such are inextricably linked to the social sciences of sociology and economics.
