Maybe there is some way to get past the laws of thermodynamics, some bit of physics that is yet undiscovered. Imagine a Victorian-era scientist trying to figure out how a nuclear reactor works. We won't know if we don't seriously try an research thing for as long as we can; no point in stopping until the last stars go out.
