I didn't expect a great career or big rewards from science but I thought at least my day-to-day would be interesting. But it's not, at the point where you're making money it's just as mindnumbing and suffering as any other wagie job.

Let's say you invested a lot of time in learning a field out of interest, published papers, got funding, etc, only to discover that the field really probably isn't going anywhere. Would you suffer through a likely somewhat successful career in a bad field, or would you waste a bunch of time going back to basics and learning something new?

Is following a carrier in applied maths (in my country it's called "mathematical engineering") a good choice?

Biochem is full of women, while physics utilizes pushes you to improves your math skills is the ultimate interdisciplinary field that overlaps with biochem. Physics leaves you with more flexible options in the end. Just don't becomes a grad student especially in chemistry if you're interested in having a career.
