>on math stackexchange
>someone asks to find the solutions to a cubic Diophantine equation
>spend an hour or so on the problem and typing it up
>there are infinitely many solutions and I parametrise all of them pretty neatly, use basic algebraic number theory techniques
>someone even complimented my answer in a comment
>turns out someone posted before me some elementary argument to show that the equation probably has solutions and uses a computer to find like 2 or 3 solutions, nothing more
>OP had already accepted the stupid solution and my answer went unnoticed in obscurity

I'm still mad about this and it has been over two years.

At what speed should a 1kg object travel to destroy earth?
Remember the gravitational binding energy is about 2x10^32 Joules

Book Recommendations - I'm trying to find a introductory book on differential geometry / smooth manifolds that isn't too long. So far, I've seen the books by Warner and Walschap. Does anyone else know of a similar book?

I came to math as an undergrad because of analysis. Not my cup of tea now, but it has a special place in my heart.

>>9942945
As >>9944728 said, that's what makes it so great. Many of the results are not always intuitively obvious. The same can be said for many other areas of math, but analysis comes at you like that from the start. It's usually the upper-division weeder course at my university.

Where can I get Barry Simon's Analysis texts cheap? I can only think to steal them from my undergrads library.

That's a possibility, thanks for the info.

I thought that by showing that [math]f(j)b=f(ja)\in{f(J)}[/math] I showed that it absorbed products and is therefore ideal. Can you elaborate? I guess I forgot to literally say in my proof that 'this means [math]f(J)[/math] is ideal.'

Intuitionism was a mistake.

The fantastic mathematician and famed expositor Barry Simon (of Reed & Simon fame) recently wrote a 5-part comprehensive course on analysis. I'm drooling over this thing and really want to read it. Has anyone looked at it/have any thoughts on it? Anyone know if it's downloadable online anywhere yet? My library has yet to stock it.
