How do I get my grad school paid for, /sci/?

Background: Finishing my BSc Mathematics (United States) soon and I'd like to pursue it further. I'm working now (data analysis) and will have a job after graduation so I'm thinking having a company pay for it might be easiest

Can you get funded for just showing up? Do I have to be a TA? Are there some people that have to pay for their masters outright? I've heard people say "you should never pay for a masters" but I'm starting to think it's a meme because it's so vague. How do I actually do it?

Why is it that [math] 2|a^2 \Rightarrow 2|a [/math]? It's something to do with 2 being prime.
It's the one thing about the proof of the irrationality of [math]sqrt{2}[/math] that I don't understand.
