I agree. I think everyone should be free to do what they want, but we should recognise that men and women do differ biologically. There have been studies, including some participated in by Professor Simon Baron-Cohen of the University of Cambridge, which indicate that hormone levels influence patterns of interest. Babies with higher prenatal testosterone levels are more interested in mechanical objects than babies with lower prenatal testosterone levels, who are more interested in faces and people. So it looks very much like there are biological reasons why males tend to be more interested in science and engineering, and females tend to be more interested in education and healthcare. I am all for freedom, and allowing people to choose what they want - if a woman wants to be an engineer she should absolutely be able to. But we shouldn't expect a perfect 50:50 gender ratio to arise in all fields, when the biology would indicate that this is very unlikely to happen.

Also, proponents of the socialisation male fail to explain where patterns of socialisation come from. That is, if men are only interested in engineering because they're socialised that way, where did the stereotype first come from? There must be some reason for men being more associated with engineering than women in the first place. And results from biology would indicate that hormones are probably the primary reason, as these hormones affect the development of the brain.
