If our universe would be a simulation it would by definition be simpler and 'smaller' than not just whatever it's running on but everything else that exists outside the simulation, and so the number of "memory cells" required to store much less process a simulation so complex might not be as relatively large 'outside' as it appears to us inside, since the number of atoms/particles in our universe might be dwarfed by the number "outside the simulation", essentially like a large game that still only takes up a fraction of the space of whatever storage medium or computer it's run on.

But this is exactly why it's stupid, and it doesn't seem to be even remotely in the realm of possibility for us to study, not now and maybe not for centuries or longer to come. Also imagine the very concept of simulations inside simulations, there would be absolutely no reason not to consider the possibility that once we do make some kind of discovery, it wouldn't just point to another simulation that, while more complex than ours, would still not satisfy our criteria of reality.
