>We are slowly destroying nature,
Big oil/corporatism
>we have numerous amounts of stockpiled weapons
Blame the people who ordered its construction and deployment.
>our food is processed and lacks basic nutrition
Blame Monsanto or your country's food and agriculture administration.
>while cancer and heart disease is more rampant than ever before.
See above.

If the scientific method was fully applied to the problems we face in terms of everything from the way we cultivate our food to how we recycle all trash to prevent toxic waste from going into the environment. For instance, do you know if we implemented plasma arc waste disposal centers everywhere (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Plasma_arc_waste_disposal)) we could recycle all those rare metals or it could break down hazardous wastes. If we implement thorium nuclear power reactors is most places electricity could become cheap to the point where a lot more ambitious projects and inventions can debut due to people not being super stingy because of their recent electric bills.

Don't blame scientific progress because of what you see in the world. Any mainstream scientific progress is usually heavily compromised by politicians and annoying people screaming SOCIALISM

There was our region of the galaxy; there was our world. I had found the entry for earth: HUMANITY: THIRD FROM THE SUN. They had heard our television broadcasts and thought them an application for cosmic citizenship. Our technology had been growing enormously (they got that right). Two hundred nation states, about six global powers, the potential to become one planet.
