Ok I admit it. I don't understand capacitors. I would like to but Wikipedia isn't helping much. Now, I understand that the voltage of a discharging capacitor lessens as it discharges, but that can be handled by a voltage regulator, can't it? What I would like is to buy some of these 1000+ farad capacitors from teh intarwebz and build myself a rechargeable power supply.

According to wikipedia, 1 farad = 1 watt-second / volt^2 so if I did my math right, 75 watts for 8 hours at 110 volts comes to just under 180 farads. Is that right?

P.S.

Not homework

Hello /sci/ I am doing a bit of a science project in which I have created a fantastic electromagnet that uses 12 volts to lift 300 lbs, (Loads of wire was used in this project....) Anyway I now have to present this project to a class of well for lack of a better term retards.... So this is my question for you /sci/ how do you explain an electromagnet to an idiot who dose not even understand electricity past the point of "Herp-a-derp I plug in Mr.celly and 2 hrs later it works aggain *Drules*" Also If any of you are board I need to include a history of the electromagnet.... (Pic somewhat related)

I'm going to be taking a class on the fundamentals of applied electromagnetics. Looks as if we're going to cover things like Waves and Phasors, Transmission Lines, Vector analysis, and Electrostatics.

Anything in these topics that might be extra difficult? I have about 2weeks until the next term and nothing better to do.

Sorry to disturb you with this meme, but I think I can't explain magnets (actually, any field, i guess) without coming off as too axiomatic.

Can you help me here?
