In USA/Canada, it's extremely common for the athletic programs at high schools or lower-tier colleges to have logos that are extremely similar, if not identical to, much more famous sports logos. It's a way to emulate and pay homage to well-known teams-although there are licensing issues oftentimes, I'm sure.

Pic related is an example of this. There's a university in Georgia with this logo, which is almost the same thing as the American Football NFL team Green Bay Packer's logo, just with a different color scheme.

Finally, when people think of the "brand" of a North American university, even in a strictly academic sense, the logo comes to mind for most people. This is even true for certain top-tier schools like Duke, oh somebody namedrop some I don't know colleges well.
